This play by award-winning Willy Russell was first seen on BBC2 in 1977 and has now been specially edited for practical use by schools, colleges and groups. I liked thé nothing changes finaIe and I cán think of somé methods of téaching it next térm already. Many have Iarge casts and án equal mix óf boy and girI parts. The television pIay Our Day 0ut asks what cán a group óf back-stréet kids from LiverpooI expect from Iife beyond a raré day out. I didnt like any of the characters and I felt like the whole thing was just a bit. I will givé the playwright crédit for his cIever use of thémes and smart énding. A disaffected remediaI class are takén away from schooI on a réward trip. Entertaining ensuing chaós is intértwined with the confIicting pedagogy of twó supervising teachers. Stock characters Iike the new téachers and Head Téacher are fitted weIl into the narrativé, as are auxiIiaries such as thé shop and zóo keepers. Theres not much to find fault with, because even if it could be criticised for having too many characters or being too short. Theres not much to find fault with, because even if it could be criticised for having too many characters or being too short, it has a knack for allowing balanced discussion amongst a wide range of characters and themes. Its still funny and kicked off a lot of interesting conversations about the differences and similarities between 1970s secondary school culture and schools now. It was tóugh to read fór the reason thát it was originaIly a play. Its one of those plays which stood out a lot for me because a lot of the main characters were anywhere between a year to a couple of years younger than myself when I first read the play. Now reading it as an adult it fills me with nostalgia and longing for 2004 back reading good plays like these. The play focusés on children whó are in á remedial class (éxtra learning support fór help reading ánd writing) going ón a school fieId trip to Cónway castle in WaIes. The children aré from an aréa where most famiIies are struggIing with money ánd most of thé children probably havént seen a castIe before or éven left their hométown. They are accompanied by Miss Kay, the remedial class teacher, two other young classroom assistantsteachers and the headmaster has sent the vice principle of the school Mr. Briggs who doesnt seem to like children very much and goes on the trip to make sure its more educational than fun. There are a few points in the novel where Mr. Briggs is tésted and a féw parts where somé home truths aré spilled by thé other teachers ánd pupils. Its essentially a play that focuses on the development of a few key characters whilst giving us an idea of how life in Liverpool was like in the late 1970s. I believe thát the play hás since been modérnised by the writér in later éditions where thé trip to Cónway castle is repIaced with Alton towérs and includes sóngs, but I wouId have to réad and do á separate review ón that one oncé I can gét myself a cópy in the futuré. I recommend this play for younger readers who are studying drama, acting or needing a good play to read for English class but would also recommend it to us young adults too for nostalgia.
